Color Discord

Color discord is created by using colors widely separated on the color wheel. These colors are visually disturbing … they clash. 

   

The Steve Miller band was known for using colors on their album covers that create a vibrating effect when put next to each other.

DEPTH

ByChanging the various tones and shades can easily create depth within an image.  This can make the image more dramatic and more interesting.  Lighting is really important when it comes to depth.

Rhythm

When it comes to having rhythm within art, it means to have have a visual beat or pattern.

Unity

In this magazine ad adidas uses unity by proximity.  Although each shoe is an entirely different element by itself, by arranging them together in a particular way the main focus is now on the adidas logo that they form as a whole and now one doesn't focus on each individual shoe, but the whole composition.

Balance

Balance is arranging elements so that no one part of a work overpowers, or seems heavier than any other part. The three different kinds of balance are symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial.  (wikipedia)

Variety

Variety is a principle of design that refers to a way of combining visual elements to achieve intricate and complex relationships. It is a technique used by artists who wish to increase the visual interest of their work.
